Mandelic Acid, Salicylic Acid and Fruit Acids

• Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid generally extracted from bitter almonds and has characteristics that make it an important ingredient for the treatment of typical blemishes of oily skin. It carries out a deep but delicate purifying and antibacterial action on the pores, reducing the onset of imperfections such as blackheads and acne.
• Salicylic acid (generally extracted from willow) is very effective in the treatment of acne thanks to its smoothing and keratolytic properties or in anti-aging treatments due to its exfoliating and lightening properties. The outermost and most superficial layer of the epidermis is the stratum corneum, formed by about 15-20 layers of dead cells, the corneocytes. The corneocytes are almost devoid of water and instead rich in keratin, a fibrous protein with a structural function. Salicylic acid is one of those so-called keratolytic substances, that is able to favor the breaking of the bonds between the keratin molecules. In practice, it manages to dissolve the stratum corneum by reducing its thickness and eliminating part of the dead cells. It also allows you to reduce its pH, thus increasing skin hydration and promoting its keratolytic activity. The incredible effectiveness of salicylic acid in fighting acne in all its types is mainly due to a double action it performs on the skin affected by this blemish. First of all, it penetrates inside the hair follicles and eliminates the dead cells (keratin caps) that cause their occlusion, thus counteracting papules, pustules and blackheads. At the same time, quickly penetrating into acne lesions, it reduces inflammation thanks to its bacteriostatic and soothing properties.

More generally, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are able to improve skin hydration and at the same time increase the production of collagen and glycosaminoglycan. In addition to mandelic and salicylic acids, there are several fruit acids obtained by standardized extraction of five plant species: blueberry, sugar cane, orange, lemon and sugar maple. PCA has hygroscopic properties and is therefore capable of binding water molecules from ambient humidity to skin cells.
